On July 7, students in the Camp Promise at St. Peter Church traveled to Raleigh, NC to participate in the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) age-appropriate programming for youth and young adults, third grade through early college. The free Summer in the Commons
program, in its second year, offers age-based curriculum and activities correlated with civic engagement and future jobs platforms. Provided with data and resources from across the state, student groups will use interactive touch screens to explore the big issues facing our state, while sharing their ideas for how to best tackle the challenges in their communities.

Students also toured the James B. Hunt Library.  They visited Pullen Park and enjoyed their lunch before returning to Kinston.

Throughout the summer, the Kinston Promise Parent University will encourage families to spend quality time together.  For the week ending on July 7, students were given a bag of popcorn to take home and share with their families while enjoying special time together.

Parents and students will also be encouraged to participate in a Journal Writing and Child/Adult Coloring Project.

Students in the Camp Promise at LaGrange-Frink Alumni Cultural Center were treated to an Aerodynamics 101 workshop on Thursday, July 7.

They participated in an engaging exchange as they learned about pilots, astronauts and parts of the airplane.  Each student received a model airplane to build and decorate.

Camp Promise is a participant in the INSPIRE 2016 program of Vision Builder Adventures.  Students will participate in hands-on STEM learning experiences in Robotics, Rocketry and Aerodynamics during the week of July 11.  Johnny White, President of Vision Builders shared, “We are excited to return to Kinston and Camp Promise and look forward to working with the youth.”
